Conundrum: Pic Tac Toe in 3D, Part III
In a normal “Pic Tac Toe” puzzle, there are nine pictures in a 3×3 grid, like Tic-Tac-Toe. In each of the three rows, three columns, and two diagonals, there is a common theme that unites the three pictures. The challenge is to find the eight themes.
In this “Pic Tac Toe” puzzle, however, there are twenty-seven pictures in a 3x3x3 grid, like a Rubik’s Cube. In each of the nine rows, nine columns, nine pillars, eighteen lateral diagonals, and four cross-cube diagonals, there is a common theme that unites the three pictures. The challenge is to find the forty-nine themes.
Imagine stacking the three levels below on top of one another. For reference, and notation guidelines, check out my last 3D Pic Tac Toe, including the comments. The rules here are identical to that puzzle.
You can click on each image to see a larger version:
Top Level – Level A
Middle Level – Level B
Bottom Level – Level C
Please post whatever you come up with in the comments section.
Enjoy!
UPDATE: Correct themes provided by Neel Mehta (35) and Billie (7). Alternate themes suggested by Neel Mehta (2), Econgator (1), and Billie (2). See comments for discussion, or click here to skip right to the answers.

As Charlton Heston would say, “Oh… dear… God.”
I’ll start lightly.
A3-A6-A9: HOUSE (Schoolhouse Rock, House, house balcony or House of [Family Name]?)
A6-B5-C4: ROBERT SEAN LEONARD (in House, Much Ado About Nothing, Dead Poets Society)
A7-A8-A9: SMITH (Mr. Smith, Mephistopheles Smith, Maggie Smith)
A8-B8-C8: CD COVERS (of Janus Theatre Company, Aaron Neville, Jim Morrison)
A9-B5-C1: SHAKESPEARE AT THE MOVIES (Richard III, Much Ado About Nothing, Shakespeare in Love)
A9-B9-C9: THREE (Richard III, Police Academy 3, Guitar Hero III)
C7-C8-C9: LEGEND (I Am Legend, Life/Death/Legend, Legends of Rock).
See? Already 1/7 of the way there.
December 19th, 2007 at 6:29 am
All of those are correct. Well done!
A9 is the House of York.
Forty-two left to go.
December 19th, 2007 at 1:31 pm
B3-B6-B9: MOTORCYCLE
Now come the question marks.
A1-A2-A3: ILLUSTRATIONS?
A3-B3-C3: AMERICANA? (Bill/Statue of Liberty, American flag, Presidents’ Day pin)
C1-C4-C7: WILL/IAM? (William Shakespeare, Robin Williams, Will Smith)
C2-C5-C8: CARDS? (Spade, diamond beneath “Oz”, the lizard king)
C3-C5-C7: BUILDING(S) IN BACKGROUND? (Washington Monument, Emerald City, Brooklyn Bridge remains)
C3-C6-C9: HATS? (it was that or long, erect objects)
For better or worse, that’s 7 more guesses.
December 19th, 2007 at 3:26 pm
B3-B6-B9: MOTORCYCLE – Yes, correct.
A1-A2-A3: ILLUSTRATIONS – Hmmm, that works, but I’m going for something very specific here.
A3-B3-C3: AMERICANA – That works too, and I’ll give you an alternate answer credit for that. I’m looking for something else, though.
C1-C4-C7: WILL/IAM – Yes, correct.
C2-C5-C8: CARDS – Creative, but not what I’m looking for. This is one of the stronger themes of the puzzle.
C3-C5-C7: BUILDING(S) IN BACKGROUND – I can see that, but look for something else that might be in the background.
C3-C6-C9: HATS – Good enough. I was actually going for TRADEMARK HATS, since Abraham Lincoln, John Steed, and Slash are all known for wearing a distinctive hat.
So there’s another three correct and an alternate answer credit. Nice work!
December 19th, 2007 at 4:23 pm
Wow. How long did this take you to create? I barely have enough attention span to brush my teeth…
December 19th, 2007 at 7:25 pm
c2-c5-c8: Death from OD (Farley, Garland, Morrison)
December 19th, 2007 at 7:38 pm
a5-b5-c5 lions (Lion King, MGM lion, Cowardly Lion)
December 19th, 2007 at 8:00 pm
b1-b2-b3 flying creatures (bat, parrot, eagle)
December 19th, 2007 at 8:05 pm
a1-a2-a3 capes
December 20th, 2007 at 1:43 am
c2-c5-c8: Death from OD (Farley, Garland, Morrison)
If Billie’s right, then yes, that is a strong theme.
I have a good old fashioned 2-D puzzle up at Brevity. K-Lyn and Billie (the same one, I assume?) got 7 of the 8 themes. The backslash diagonal is still unsolved, and you know what that means.
December 20th, 2007 at 1:52 am
Oh, and
C3-C5-C7: CLOUDS
Sorry I’ve been slow with this one. I keep running into red herrings, like
A7 (Capra’s) – B7 (Miriam’s) – C7 (?)
B1 (Batman) – B5 (Michael Keaton) – B9 (?)
C7 (Robert Neville) – B8 (Aaron Neville) – A9 (?)
There’s ROBERT in play for A4-A5-A6, with Robert Guillaume and Robert Sean Leonard, but I don’t know what’s being depicted in A4. Or B4, for that matter. And B7 doesn’t seem to go with anything so far.
But I’ll work on it some more.
December 20th, 2007 at 6:03 am
Welcome, Billie! All four answers are correct. Actually, my theme for A1-A2-A3 was FLYING, since Captain Hero, Harry Potter, and Interplanet Janet are all in mid-air. But the first two also have capes, and so does My Hero Zero, so full credit there.
Neel, CLOUDS is correct. So is one of your three red herrings. Actually, this puzzle seems to have more red herrings than usual, but that was not intentional. A4 is from Dr. Jeckyl and Mr. Hyde. B4 is from a movie called Joe the King. A5 does not make use of Robert Guillaume. In fact, I don’t think any of the animated characters make use of their voice actors, though I reserve the right to go there in the future.
Andrew, I’ve been working on this on and off for some time now. I’d estimate that designing a 3D puzzle takes about four times as long as designing a regular Pic Tac Toe. There are three times the pictures, and over six times as many themes. They also tend to last longer in the solving, and so, can be enjoyed longer.
December 21st, 2007 at 9:41 pm
It’s weak, but could A7-B7-C7 be Capra’s-Miriam’s-Warner Brother’s (Pictures)?
December 21st, 2007 at 9:49 pm
I was thinking C1-C4-C7 might be suicides:
In Shakespeare in Love, they perform Romeo and Juliet, both who commit suicide. In Dead Poet’s Society, one of the students commits suicide. In I am Legend, Neville kills himself to allow his daughter to love.
December 22nd, 2007 at 1:51 am
Welcome, econgator!
It’s a good idea, but Warner Bros. doesn’t take an apostrophe. My theme for A7-B7-C7 is purely visual, and does not require additional knowledge.
I like the suicide angle, but C1-C4-C7 has been solved. The answer is WILL (William Shakespeare, Robin Williams, Will Smith). I can give you an alternate answer credit, though, because yours holds up too.
December 22nd, 2007 at 9:47 am
A7-B7-C7: YELLOW-TINTED BACKGROUNDS?
While I’m guessing…
A6-B6-C6: LEATHER? (Omar Epps’ shoe, motorcycle seat, lady’s vest)
B2-B5-B8: SHAKESPEAREAN VILLAINS (Iago, Don John, Aaron)
Nice Mehta-theme there.
December 22nd, 2007 at 10:37 am
You are correct on YELLOW-TINTED BACKGROUNDS and SHAKESPEAREAN VILLAINS. Nicely done! I was actually thinking of throwing out the Mehta-theme hint on that one.
I can’t really tell what material Honor Blackman’s vest is made from. But honestly that’s not the strongest theme of the puzzle to begin with. I can tell you that A6 and C6 have something very strongly in common, and once you know what you’re looking for, you can make B6 fit. You don’t need to know anything that’s not in the pictures for this theme. For other themes, though, it will help to know that the guy on the motorcycle in B6 is George Clooney.
December 22nd, 2007 at 10:56 am
Neel, I took a closer look at C6, and that does look like leather. I think your theme is better than mine, so I’m going to change the answer to LEATHER, and give you the point. I was thinking HANDLES, and using the handlebars on the motorcycle, along with John Steed’s umbrella and House’s cane.
December 22nd, 2007 at 1:47 pm
I think LEATHER and HANDLES are equally good answers. The first thing I noticed was the cane and the umbrella, but didn’t see a matching accessory in B6, and so I looked elsewhere.
For other themes, though, it will help to know that the guy on the motorcycle in B6 is George Clooney.
I almost asked you that exact question! Didn’t look like Christian Bale at all, and wasn’t obviously Clooney. This guy’s got a scruffy white beard or something. I figured if it was Clooney, you’d use a more identifiable image of him on a motorcycle.
So, B4-B5-B6: BATMAN (Val Kilmer, Michael Keaton, George Clooney)
A9-B6-C3: BEARDS? (on Nigel Hawthorne, George Clooney, Mickey Mouse)
A3-B6-C9: HERO? (Schoolhouse Rocky, Clooney as Batman, Guitar Hero)
December 22nd, 2007 at 2:05 pm
A1-B1-C1: HERO also might work, if it’s not the A3-B6-C9 theme, but more specifically, AMBIGUOUSLY GAY? (Captain Hero, Batman/Robin, Ben Affleck)
I had to read up on Captain Hero on Wikipedia. That was disgusting. You owe me.
In other news…
A2-B5-C8: NEW YORK TIMES (bestseller, blurb, bestseller)
December 22nd, 2007 at 2:06 pm
Whew. I was concerned you wouldn’t get BATMAN. That one was just for you.
I’m seeing the scruff, but I’d hardly call it a beard. A9-B6-C3 actually has a pretty solid theme. Who is Nigel Hawthorne playing? For that matter, who is Maggie Smith playing?
HERO is not the correct theme, at least not for A3-B6-C9. If it were, though, I’d be using My Hero Zero up top. Alas, My Hero Zero is not used in the puzzle (other than Billie’s observant alternate theme above), though in retrospect, I could have made a connection to the “Nothing” in B5, which is also not used in the puzzle.
December 22nd, 2007 at 2:40 pm
Ugh. All that reading up on Captain Hero was completely unnecessary.
A1-B1-C1: LOVE (Foxxy Love, Batman falls in love, Shakespeare in Love)
December 22nd, 2007 at 3:02 pm
A9-B6-C3 actually has a pretty solid theme. Who is Nigel Hawthorne playing? For that matter, who is Maggie Smith playing?
According to the IMDb, Nigel Hawthorne plays George, Duke of Clarence, and Maggie Smith is the Duchess of York.
So maybe A9-B6-C3: GEORGE? That’s probably not the solid theme you meant, though.
December 22nd, 2007 at 5:01 pm
I think GEORGE is pretty solid.
“Solid” is so subjective sometimes. For the purposes of this puzzle, I figured it meant “once owned a pot-bellied pig.”
Don’t give up on HERO, though. It’s in there somewhere.
And so it is.
A1-B5-C9: HERO (Captain Hero, Kate Beckinsale, Guitar Hero)
And the Duchess of York has a name.
Ah, Cecily Neville. Thank you, IMDb character page.
I thought you were going to force me to read the play, which may have been your grand design all along.
A9-B8-C7: NEVILLE (Cecily, Aaron, Robert)
December 22nd, 2007 at 4:32 pm
I think GEORGE is pretty solid. Full credit there, and for LOVE and NEW YORK TIMES as well.
Don’t give up on HERO, though. It’s in there somewhere.
And the Duchess of York has a name.
December 22nd, 2007 at 5:34 pm
Back to guessing…
A1-A4-A7: BLACK AND WHITE? (Toot Braunstein, Jekyll/Hyde, Mr. Smith etc.)
C1-C5-C9: ROCK BANDS? (Rush, Toto, Guns ‘n Roses)
December 22nd, 2007 at 5:57 pm
Yes to HERO, NEVILLE, and BLACK & WHITE. Alternate answer credit for ROCK BANDS. Very nice.
December 22nd, 2007 at 6:15 pm
The following 24 themes are still unsolved:
A4-A5-A6
A2-A5-A8
A1-A5-A9
A3-A5-A7
B7-B8-B9
B1-B4-B7

A7-B8-C9
A3-B5-C7
A7-B5-C3
December 22nd, 2007 at 9:44 pm
A1-B2-C3: ANIMATION? (or Disney-style animation, if you single out Princess Clara in A1)
A4-B5-C6: JOHN (actor John Barrymore, characters Don John and John Steed)
C4-C5-C6: GALE (actor Gale Hansen, characters Dorothy Gale and Catherine Gale)
I had the hardest time with A4 because I thought it was the 1931 Fredric March version. Who knew they made one 11 years earlier?
December 22nd, 2007 at 10:11 pm
That said, if A4 had a crutch or something, then A4-A5-A6 would be easy. Instead:
A4-A5-A6: WOODEN OBJECTS (gavel, walking stick, cane)
And I’m an idiot.
A3-B3-C3: BILL (I’m just a Bill, Bill W., Donald Duck’s bill)
December 23rd, 2007 at 8:23 am
Yes to BILL, GALE, JOHN, and DISNEY.
Alternate answer credit for WOOD. The A4-B4-C4 theme has to do with the character depicted in each picture (the main character where there’s more than one). Start with A4 and C4 – the theme is in the title.
December 23rd, 2007 at 5:37 pm
Don’t you mean A4-A5-A6, and not A4-B4-C4?
If so, then A4-A5-A6: DOCTOR (Dr. Jekyll, shaman doctor, Dr. House)
Now, as for A4-B4-C4: HENRY? (Henry Jekyll, Joe Henry, oft-quoted Henry David Thoreau)
Hmm. With you off in Spain for a week and blogging sporadically, if at all, I should probably strike a balance between:
1. Giving this Pic-Tac-Toe a deserved amount of attention; and
2. Getting over-anxious with the likely lack of responses.
We’ll see how that goes. Enjoy your trip.
December 24th, 2007 at 4:20 pm
The A4-B4-C4 theme is not HENRY. It’s a theme you’ve used in the past.
Well, it’s not SEAT, then. How about REFLECTION? (wine glass, side mirror, spectacles)
I have access to the Internet at the apartment here in Barcelona, so I should be able to check in on a daily basis.
Also important: checking out Barcelona on a daily basis. If you skip a day or seven on the Internet, so be it.
December 24th, 2007 at 3:40 pm
My apologies – I did mean A4-A5-A6. And it is DOCTOR. The A4-B4-C4 theme is not HENRY. It’s a theme you’ve used in the past.
I have access to the Internet at the apartment here in Barcelona, so I should be able to check in on a daily basis.
December 26th, 2007 at 7:56 am
Sorry, too much of an Internet addict not to check my e-mail daily.
Your guess for A4-B4-C4 is close enough. I was going for GLASS.

December 26th, 2007 at 5:50 pm
A1-A5-A9: ROYALTY? (Princess Clara, Lion King, royal family)
A2-A5-A8: ANIMAL FEET? (unicorn, lion, cloven hooves)
A8-B5-C2: RICHARD (Richard O’Brien, Richard Briers, character Richard Hayden)
December 27th, 2007 at 1:54 am
Correct on ROYALTY and RICHARD. I wasn’t sure if anyone would get the latter, since Richard Briers isn’t in the cast photo, but is pictured below. So very nicely done!
As for A2-A5-A8, I’d suggest looking at the three pictures in a more holistic sense, rather than trying to pick out a common element.
December 27th, 2007 at 5:35 pm
a2-a5-a8 “otherworldliness” (wizard, shaman, devil)
December 27th, 2007 at 5:56 pm
Yes, that’s correct. Welcome back, Billie!
December 27th, 2007 at 7:03 pm
a3-a5-a7 subject of Simpson’s spoofs (episodes “The Day the Violence Died”, “Round Springfield”, “Mr. Lisa Goes to Washington”)
December 28th, 2007 at 6:36 pm
Billie, that’s not what I had in mind, but I looked up your references and it holds up. I’m not sure how big of a tent it is, but I’ll give you an alternate answer credit, because my answer isn’t nearly as interesting.
With that in mind, it might be more fun to focus on these seven themes, and then we can call it a day:
B7-B8-B9
B1-B5-B9
C1-C5-C9
A7-B4-C1
A3-B6-C9
A3-B5-C7
A7-B5-C3
December 28th, 2007 at 9:07 pm
a7-b5-c3 Washington (Mr. Smith Goes to.., Denzel, monument)
a3-b5-c7 New York (Statue of Liberty, New York Times review, Brooklyn Bridge)
December 28th, 2007 at 9:41 pm
a3-b6-c9 rock? (b6 appears to have a “rocky” wall background)
December 28th, 2007 at 10:14 pm
Billie’s probably right with those 3, so I’ll tackle the other 4.
A7-B4-C1: JOE/JOSEPH (Sen. Joseph Harrison Paine, Joe Henry, Joseph Fiennes)
B1-B5-B9: SHOULDER-LENGTH HAIR? (on Magda, Hero/Beatrice, Bubba Smith)
B7-B8-B9: LEGACY? (Miriam’s daughters, song remake, threequel)
I don’t think I’m going to come up with anything better than ROCK BANDS, so…
C1-C5-C9: HINTED HOMOSEXUALITY (Ben Affleck, friends of Dorothy, Slash fiction)
December 29th, 2007 at 4:10 am
B7-B8-B9: Not LEGACY. Actually, this is one of my favorite themes in the puzzle. Bubba’s relevant, but only for his character’s name.
Wow. That is impressive.
B7-B8-B9: BIBLICAL SIBLINGS (Miriam, Aaron, Moses)
B1-B5-B9: Not HAIR. If you don’t know Much Ado very well, look at the other two pictures and extrapolate.
Oh, I know the play. But 49 themes, man. It’s hard for me to focus.
B1-B5-B9: POLICE (police car, constable, police academy)
C1-C5-C9: Not HOMOSEXUALITY. Check out Wikipedia. Did you know the characters in Guitar Hero III have names?
Huh, I would have never thought to look that up. That might make me a video game snob.
C1-C5-C9: JUDI/JUDY (Judi Dench, Judy Garland, Judy Nails)
December 29th, 2007 at 3:16 am
B7-B8-B9: Not LEGACY. Actually, this is one of my favorite themes in the puzzle. Bubba’s relevant, but only for his character’s name.

C1-C5-C9: Not HOMOSEXUALITY. Check out Wikipedia. Did you know the characters in Guitar Hero III have names?
A7-B4-C1: JOE/JOSEPH is correct. Point for Neel!
A3-B6-C9: ROCK is correct. Point for Billie!
A3-B5-C7: Alternate answer credit for Billie for NEW YORK CITY. This one might be easier after you’ve solved B1-B5-B9.
A7-B5-C3: WASHINGTON is correct. Point for Billie! I would have expected this to be one of the first to go, but I guess with 49 themes, it’s easy to overlook a multi-level diagonal.
December 29th, 2007 at 12:09 pm
All three are correct. Nice work!
For the record, the following nine themes are still unsolved:
A3-A5-A7
B1-B4-B7
B3-B5-B7
C1-C2-C3
A2-B2-C2
A1-B4-C7
A3-B2-C1
A7-B8-C9
A3-B5-C7
I’ll be back in New York tomorrow and will post all of the answers.
December 29th, 2007 at 5:12 pm
Some final guesses.
C1-C2-C3: PAIRS? Or maybe ACCESSORIES? (earring/necklace, tie clip, Disney pin)
A2-B2-C2: BOY? (the boy who lived, Aladdin tune “Proud of Your Boy,” Tommy Boy)
A3-B2-C1: LAMP? (Lady Liberty’s lamp, Genie’s lamp, lamp light)
A3-B5-C7: ROBERT? (Robert Neville, Robert Sean Leonard, “When Robert Fulton made the steamboat go…”)
That’s all I got. Frankly, I’m quite content with identifying 33 of these themes.
December 29th, 2007 at 5:29 pm
PAIRS and LIGHTS are correct, so there’s two more.
I’m also content with how much of the puzzle has been solved. The remaining themes are nothing exciting. Thanks to all who played. Answers will be posted tomorrow.
December 31st, 2007 at 5:45 am
I’m back home now, and ready to post the answers. I had a lot of fun with this one; I hope you did too. I was very pleased to see that more people are starting to get involved with solving these, and I think Neel was too.
