Spatially Challenged
It’s been a while since I’ve really written anything, but I’ve been busy with a number of things, mostly work related. I’ve also been working on a new resource for this website which should be available shortly. Watch this space!
Last weekend, I attended a social studies conference that I’ve been meaning to write about. One of the speakers was Phil Gersmehl, who discussed the latest research in spatial intelligence. It seems that there are now believed to be eight different types of spatial intelligence, each housed in a different section of the brain. He suggested that geography education, at an early age, could help to strengthen these abilities. I say, it’s never too late.
Via The Media Dude, here’s a geography game that will help you practice your map skills. His brother, The Boy Wonder, points us toward an old Nintendo game called Warehouse 18, which is less about dexterity and more about using spatial thinking to solve visual puzzles.
And yeah, I’ve been pretty busy with these, too.

I’m still addicted to both games. I can get to Level 10 on each, but then I get stuck.
I can’t say I’m a fan of Dr. Mario, though.

I’m VERY relieved to hear you say you only got to level 10 – I confess the same for myself….but if that’s as far as you get then I’m doing good!!!!

Yeah, you have to be pretty familiar with Africa to get past Level 10, which I am not, so it’s a feat I have yet to accomplish.
I’ve been spending a lot more time playing Warehouse 18, also stuck on Level 10. The player starts the level all boxed in, and I can’t seem to figure out how to escape. But I have not given up yet.

Hey – is there a way to skip to the higher level on Warehouse? I hate starting at the beginning again = I want to go to the last level I didn’t get through……

Okay, I just figured it out. You hit Enter and then you can use the arrow keys to select your level.
That’s a relief, since I finally figured out how solve the level I’ve been stuck on, but was having some trouble getting back up to it.
And it turns out that it’s Level 9, not Level 10. It seems that the first level is Level 0.
