Your Move: Thursday Morning Riddle
The Shakespeare Teacher is out. It’s your move.
Today’s challenge is the Thursday Morning Riddle. The answer is:
CHECK
CHECK is correct. Way to go, Bill!
Now, you write the riddle.
Entries should follow the same format as earlier riddles: four lines of anapestic tetrameter with rhyme scheme AAAA (all four lines rhyme). Riddles are written in the first person (i.e., from the point of view of “Check”). Semicolons are used to mark a change in word meaning. The word “Check” should not be in the riddle.
Entries are due by April 28, and a winner will be chosen after that time.
UPDATE: Contest won by Anonymous. See comments for all entries.

I’m the end of a chess match; A call to a waiter;
A partner of balance; A slash on a paper;
An exchange for rain; A payment in kind;
A decline to bet in a game of the mind.

I’m a mark in a box one can easily view;
A payment on paper written by you;
Reality’s message should confusion ensue;
And a batter’s decision to not follow through.

I’m a speakers examination that the mic’s working fine
Or a peak in the pot to confirm that we’re ready to dine
I’m a hockey move used when possesion’s on the other side
And the point where a guard called Charlie might preside

Wait!!
I’m a speakers examination that the mic’s working fine
Or a peak in the pot to confirm that we’re ready to dine
I’m a hockey move used when possesion’s on the other side
And an East German point where Charlie might preside
I like the last line better in this one!

Not all of my four lines rhyme so I’m sure i’m disqualified but I sure did enjoy the exercise!!!

P.S. EXCELLENT job by Asher and Alli!!! All props are due!

DeLisa, I didn’t read the whole entry and didn’t realize this was a contest so I submitted twice which probably disqualified me too. I guess that makes Asher the winner. Asher, is it a hollow victory to be the winner by default? Jk ;-)

Oh and I just realized I wrote this in couplets. Lol, I really should read the rules before I do these things.

Very impressive work so far. I should do this more often!
Yes, all four lines rhyming is an important TMR feature. If I had to pick now, Asher would win on that alone (though all three riddles are extremely creative and worthy of praise).
Multiple entries are absolutely allowed. So if you’d like to submit new riddles, or tweak your previous entries, I will judge the best entry.
And if you write something that makes you proud, that should be more important than whether or not you are judged the “winner” of a contest.

Thanks DeLisa, Bill…and Allison. There’s still some time between now and the 28th…Let’s see what happens.

You can cancel me, void me, deposit me, tear;
I’m the box that you mark to denote something there;
I’m a pattern on cloth kitchen tables can wear;
Move your king to a safe and available square.

And I spelled posession wrong! Geez! At least I got at E for effort.

I just found this now…12:37 A.M. on 4/30. Been refreshing last week’s challenge to find the post relating to: “Entries are due by April 28, and a winner will be chosen after that time.” Also would like to know who Anonymous is…terrific entry.

Agreed. All of the entries are creative and engaging, and everyone should be proud of their contributions, but the winner is the Anonymous poster who wrote the final entry. Congratulations to the unknown poet!
