About Quincy

Quincy is a highly sophisticated artificial intelligence algorithm who helps me divide the roles in each play into parts for the readers. He is named for Peter Quince, the role-assigning character in A Midsummer Night's Dream.

The plays are divided to avoid overlap, so that readers read scenes with themselves as little as possible. Quincy also tries to assign everyone a relatively equal-sized part and minimize the time a reader has to wait to read. Obviously, these goals are in conflict with one other, so Quincy does the best he can.

Quincy tries to make his lists easy for the readers to use during a reading. Characters in each scene are listed in order of appearance. Quincy does not sub-divide roles; each character is assigned to one reader, who reads that character throughout the play.

Quincy also has suggestions for how many readers make a good reading for each play. If you have too few readers, people will end up doing scenes with themselves. If you have too many, some readers will get smaller parts and can get bored with long stretches waiting to read.

Of course, you may have specific reasons for wanting to do a reading of a particular play with a set number of readers. This page provides play divisions for 2-12 readers regardless of Quincy's recommendations.
